The Sun Eaters are the survivors of the Dual Monarchy’s Exemplar program — youths selected young, enhanced at enormous expense, educated in the classical tradition, and trained as the Monarchy’s finest soldiers. Faster, stronger, sharper, and steeped in ethics, strategy, and history. The Monarchy’s best and brightest, pointed at colonial worlds and told to civilize them.

They took the philosophy seriously. The Monarchy didn’t. After years of enforcing colonial rule they’d been taught was just, the gap between ideals and conduct broke something in them. They refused orders. The Monarchy excommunicated them.

Now they’re twenty. They can’t make more. They fight like nothing else in the sector — not because they’re superhuman, but because they operate as a single tactical organism with classical educations and six years of survival against every power in the Triangle. They’re trying to build “Callipolis,” a society governed by virtue. They also can’t stop looking down on the people they want to save.
