Celeva
Type: Mining Asteroid System: Nusantara System Environment: Metallic dust field, low gravity (~1/3 standard) Primary Industry: Mining (transplutonic ores) Notable Feature: Ancient catacombs and corrupted engrams
Overview
Celeva is veiled by a perpetual field of metallic dust—remnants of ancient orbital installations ground to glittering powder by centuries of microimpacts. The asteroid houses an extensive necropolis deep within, operated by the Mortuary Cult of Thanatists.
Geography
The Prow: A massive promontory jutting spaceward, site of the main docking spire.
Gravity is approximately one-third standard, and locals move with a practiced glide-step that makes them seem to float.
Districts and Locations
Prow Markets
The living conduct their business beneath vaulted ceilings carved to resemble inverted boat hulls.
Notable Features:
- Kopi hitam - Black coffee brewed with water filtered through sacred charcoal from memory vaults
- Market stalls overflow with “remembrances” and preservation oil
- Small carved boats no bigger than a thumb
- Diamond souls everywhere: memory crystals worn as pendants, worked into rings, pressed against foreheads in grief or decision
- Most diamond souls are dark, data corrupted beyond recovery, but kept anyway
The Twilight Streets
Bioluminescent panels (once emergency lighting) now cultivated like gardens. Buildings stack like vertebrae, connected by bridges. Every aperture shrouded in silk-thin veils, billowing gently as if breathing, meditating upon the infinite void.
Every surface bears carved names, dates, fragments of lives:
- “Suliana, who sailed the Bitter Eye”
- “Rahman, remembered in the third choir”
- “Li Wei, whose laughter echoes still”
The Upper Catacombs
Armored and armed Thanatists guard the entrances, scanning visitors with devices like Geiger counters (but not measuring radiation). The deep dead don’t distinguish between visitors and intruders.
Interior:
- Honeycombed walls with niches containing the dead
- Mummies with funeral cloths glimmering with circuits
- Skulls with wired memory banks
- Bodies in cracked suspension pots
- Everywhere the glow of diamond souls like stars in darkness
- Corridors carved to suggest ship hulls
- Intersections opening like capsized cargo holds
- Some passages flooded with thick, oily water (coolant? something older?)
- Funerary barges piloted by Thanatists
Typical Broadcast: “Remember your name. Remember your journey. The Long Night preserves, the New Dawn awaits. You were [static], you sailed [corruption], you are remembered in the [null string error]…”
Response: “I… remember… the stars…”
Mortuary Cult
The Thanatists of Celeva believe in the mortality of the soul. Without a body, the soul will fade, so bodies are preserved and interred. With advancements in engrams, the cult began preserving minds on diamond souls and later gave those souls robotic shells.
Through exacting ritual and holy secrets, the ancient guardians can be appeased. Celevan Thanatists can commune with the (somewhat) insane minds of the past. They can sometimes motivate the guardians to grant boons from archeo-fabricators in the depths of the catacombs.
Processions: White-robed figures bearing bodies wrapped in sailcloth embedded with circuitry. They chant in a language that sounds like corrupted code—binary rhythms mixed with ancient Javanese. Mourners follow, each carrying a small light (electronic, flame, or mixture where sparks fly from failing components). They’re always heading downward, toward the Catacombs.
Mining
Celeva and its satellites retain rich deposits of transplutonic ores worth billions of credits. However, almost all mining is artisanal—careful not to disrupt the catacombs and bound by religious law.
